Hello families, parents and faculty! It is nearly midnight here in Taiwan and I just can’t sleep. Partly because I had to post six blog entries, partly because I have a digital mountain of homework and projects I need to grade (because I won’t be able to do it on Friday — that’s for sleeping and recovering from Jet lag), but mostly because our epic trip to Taiwan is coming to an end.
Taipei is a magical city with elite cuisine, some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet and an ethos of care and compassion for the individual and the community alike. Is Taiwan perfect, no. Does it need to be? Probably not. What it is to me is not only a cultural home base physically, but within my mind, I think I always cherish Taiwan because of the three trips I have now taken on behalf of the Northwest School.
On this trip, I got to witness two entirely different cultures come together, and not clash. No, there was trepidation and nervousness at first, but that quickly gave way to curiosity, collegiality and, most importantly, compassion! Your students put aside any perceived differences, and truly immersed themselves in every opportunity. We met students from two different parts of the island, connected with members of an aboriginal tribe, made our own Blue Dye patterns, paper, traditional fans, coasters using digital media and PINEAPPLE CAKE (from scratch!!!).
And all throughout the way, we took pictures…. A LOT OF PICTURES….. No, seriously, ask your students how many times they were asked to take a group picture on this trip! Speaking of which, here are some of them (in reverse order)!
